GENERAL INFORMATION:

It must have been as early as November 2016 that we started following the story of Călin and his faithful hound Noah, set out on a quest to open the first craft brewery in the city of Târgu Mureș. We watched them with curious eyes as they posted photos from local homebrew tasting sessions of their pale and Christmas ales, hoping that their beers would come our way soon. And then, in spring of 2017, when we saw the first photos of their brewery and equipment being set up, we told ourselves that this is it, an official launch will be due any minute now.

Fate and the tedious bureaucratic process in Romania kept us on our toes for a while longer, and it wasn’t until May 2018 that their authorizations finally came through. It only took 600 days since filing their paperwork, but, in a very fitting way, they turned out to be the best present for Noah’s (the dog) 10 year birthday.

Since then, they have been working on adjusting their recipes, and their first pale ale was officially released at the beginning of December. Now, the general consensus is that brewing craft beer is an art in its own right, and that artists are, by definition, perfectionists. Still, we were surprised when we heard that Călin, the brewer, chose to discard 3 fully fledged batches down the drain, simply because he wasn’t happy with the way they turned out. What made this so surprising is the fact that, in a world where making amends with overdue bills and other financial setbacks takes priority, coming across a brewer who shows so much integrity towards not only his brand, but also his consumers, is no small feat. He gets a very shiny golden star in our books based on that alone.

After a very positive response they’ve had locally, in 2019 their beers started becoming more and more available across the country, both in bars, as well as at various events. Their range has grown steadily, and in the autumn of 2019, they even started tackling collaborations.

Even though Noah the dog has, sadly, departed from this world in February 2019, Călin pays him homage with Angels Have Tails, a beer launched every year on the 24th of February, to commemorate all golden retrievers that have turned into fluffy-tailed angels. It’s a rare treat, so make sure to keep an eye out for it.

2020 has had its ups and downs for the local brewing industry, but for Bere Noah, things took an overall upward curve. Not only did they expand their brewery, but in late December, they (finally) topped the Untappd charts, by earning the ranking of best rated brewery in Romania.

Given both their small output, their quality fueled popularity, as well as the fact that more than 90% of it is sold locally, their beers usually fly off the shelves and taps quite quickly. However, for those not around in Târgu Mureș, Berero Store is usually a safe bet when it comes to picking up some of their bottles.
