Founded in 2013, Nemțeana is part of the second wave of Romanian craft breweries and one of the forerunners of the industry as we know it today. This family-run business had its first hands-on beer encounter back in 2007, when they were given the opportunity to revive the Solca brewery in Suceava county (one of the many Romanian independent breweries that closed down during the communism regime). After they got it back on its feet, the family decided that a change was in order, so they swapped their spirits and fizzy drinks supply business for something on the craftier side.
Nemțeana place great value on tradition: from the strong family ties instilled in them by their grandfather, Jorj, to the long brewing practices that existed in Neamț county (spiced up with a bit of Reinheitsgebot guidelines), to the styles of the beers they are currently making. Unlike many artisan breweries that have been on the market for several years, Nemțeana have kept their range simple, with a blond and an amber lager. In fact, it wasn’t until 2017, for the 4 year anniversary, that they expanded their portfolio with a dark lager.
One of the larger craft breweries in Romania, Nemțeana is one of the few artisan breweries in the country to use exclusively Romanian base malts, as well as locally sourced bittering hops. The resulting brews are a great gateway beer for those new to craft beer, as well as an excellent alternative to commercial ones.
Their beer is widely available by the bottle and on tap all over the country, and it also one of the most affordable craft beers on the market at the moment.
