General information:

The fourth stand-alone brewery in Sibiu county saw its grand opening in the autumn of 2020. Founded by Alexandru (or ‘Ducu’, to friends) and Sylvain (a French native with an artistic streak), the brewery is located in the picturesque village of Cristian, once an important name within the local hop growing industry.

The two partners paid close attention to the cultural heritage of the region and used it to shape the identity of the brewery. They picked the name ‘Cibis’ from the Cibin river, which runs just 150 meters from where the beer is made. The brewery itself is a quaint sight in its own right, set inside an old Transylvanian Saxon house built in the XIXth century by the owner’s great-grandparents. Also, the beer labels display the fortified church in the village of Cristian, built by the local community in the XIIIth century. And because every part of their beer and branding comes with a story, it made sense that the logo would feature Renard, the fox from medieval French tales, to remind us of our love for stories and storytelling (best enjoyed along with a beer).

Cibis Beer debuted with a diverse range of 6 beers, which are currently sold online as well as through a few HoReCa partners around Sibiu. The small brewing setup allows for a maximum potential output of 200hl per year, yet the brewery itself is quite spacious, and it even has a cellar converted into an underground pub, perfect for beer tastings, and even Rock’N’Roll music nights. Here’s hoping that current restrictions will ease off enough to allow you to pay them a visit, but in the meantime, you can buy their beers direct from their website in either 330ml bottles or 500ml bottles.
